Mathilda, a twelve-year old New York girl, is living an undesirable life among her half-family. Her father stores drugs for two-faced cop Norman Stansfield. Only her little brother keeps Mathilda from breaking apart. One day, Stansfield and his team take cruel revenge on her father for stretching the drugs a little, thus killing the whole family. Only Mathilda, who was out shopping, survives by finding shelter in Léon's apartment in the moment of highest need. Soon, she finds out about the strange neighbour's unusual profession - killing - and desperately seeks his help in taking revenge for her little brother. Léon, who is completely unexperienced in fatherly tasks, and in friendships, does his best to keep Mathilda out of trouble - unsuccessfully. Now, the conflict between a killer, who slowly discovers his abilities to live, to feel, to love and a corrupt police officer, who does anything in his might to get rid of an eye witness, arises to unmeasurable proportions - all for the ...

Masterpiece of violent Characterisations and fast action-shooting

An interview with Anne Parillaud, in the Evening Standard, 24.8.90, it was said that the message of Nikita is not one of violence but the idea is that people who are full of despair and missing love are not alone.

This idea continues in Léon. Léon was Besson's first foray into international film production. The similarities, or parallels, between Nikita and Léon are undoubted. Both the central protagonists attempt to come to terms with their dysfunctionality, to society, against a background of violence, which they both continue to act upon as the agent of someone else. There is no clean difference (we may also include Le Dernier Combat for comparison.) The only difference is gender.

I always found that until obtaining the "Version Integral" there was a character hole in the plot. The original cut released for US audiences was felt, by Besson, had an "offending" scene cut which ruined later scenes. The American test audiences hated it, seeing it as perverse and paedophiliac. The film was still panned by US critics as quasi-child pornography on general release. What it to be understood about this film, and this is what infuriated Besson, is that the film is about pure love. Not sex, which is all the Americans, could see.

And so we have ascertained that the characters in Besson's films are, simply, great. Then there is the action which is all the grace and style of Nikita. Typical of Besson's style with fast action-shooting and violent characterisation. This has to be one of Jean Reno's and by far Natalie Portman's best screen performance. To me, Gary Oldman plays his part to the tee, said by some magazines to be the best screen bad guy - it is one of his best performances.

Stylisation and excess are hallmarks of Besson's work. Characters are larger than life. Décors are in excess of realism. Besson's characters lack psychological depth. "The sumptuous and the ornate cohabit with the violent or the vulgar." Besson's use of excess is also extremely playful mixing violence with humour. Besson's work appeals to the tastes of popular culture and may not please that of the elite - arguably a reason for the rejection of his work by many intellectual film journals.

I have yet to hear of a person putting a bad word against this film. There is nothing I can personally fault so I give this film 10/10, a score only two other somewhat different films hold in my IMDb list of 345 films - "The Wizard of Oz" and "La Cité des Enfants perdu". If you like French Cinema or consider yourself a cinephile you must see the latter.

Awesome!

I just finished screening this movie for the first time after putting it off for a number of years because of what seemed like equivocating appraisals from some of my friends. In hindsight, however, it seems to me that while the movie must have definitely bowled them over, overall they weren't sure exactly what to make of it or how to articulate what were probably a confused mix of feelings. But I am so impressed that I feel compelled to add a few specific observations to the many fine reviews already on this database.

First, this movie hits you with an impact somewhere in between, say, APOCALYPSE NOW and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, and for some people may be just as disturbing (however, in this respect I am happy to report I didn't think it rose to the level of NATURAL BORN KILLERS). Full of graphically violent action and language, PULP FICTION is not a picture for everyone - I would definitely not recommend it to my parents, born in the 1930's (even to my one fairly "hip" relative of the same generation who, at age 66, still teaches high school sex education and likes to talk about things like sunbathing nude, among other potentially sensitive issues).

Irrespective of audience sensibilities, however, the film-makers, supported by superb acting in every role, manage to create a world full of the most fascinating sleazy characters possibly ever to appear on screen. From Travolta's pronounced almost-child-like curiosity about the world to Jackson's sincere and thoughtful philosophical ruminating and Willis's deep devotion to the memory of his father, I think such fascination lies not only in the characters' personalities as they are portrayed but in the way they tantalize the viewer into considering the possibility that such people could actually exist. As a lawyer of some years' experience dealing with all sorts of people I was particularly drawn to this aspect of the film.

Thus, and in response to some other reviewers' comments, I think this movie is more character-driven than plot-driven. Instead of a story peopled by basically weakly developed characters employed primarily as a mere device to move the plot along, as is too frequently the case in the movies (especially these days), the undeniably strong, clever, and unpredictable plot lines in PULP FICTION are actually of essentially secondary interest and importance, serving primarily as vehicles to get you worried about the fate of characters you can't help caring about despite the truly low attributes that otherwise form the basis for their respective personas. As at least one other reviewer noted, when the film ends you are actually disappointed, left craving more of these crazy people and their explosive lives.

Finally, and as strange as it may sound, this film reminds me of another Monumentally Great Film which one would never typically associate with it in any way in a million years - CASABLANCA. As in that film made way back in 1942, and as another reviewer has suggested, perhaps its special appeal - its unusually high degree of emotional impact - lies in its distinctly successful simultaneous application of several different genres in a single film - drama, action, dark humor - with the whole thing bound together by essentially flawless execution in every department. And while CASABLANCA is no doubt clearly much more wholesome and high-minded, like the older film PULP FICTION is not without a pronounced theme of redemption, even if it is not as strongly felt, considering all the later film's sleaze and violence.

In sum, when people say that this is probably the best film of the 1990's, it is easy to see why. Fundamentally a truly outstanding movie, it is a must-see for anyone who considers themself a film buff and can handle graphic subject matter.

(Incidentally, if you would like a more toned-down, much more overtly humorous and less serious picture with a not-altogether dissimilar look and feel, don't miss another 1990's Travolta picture, GET SHORTY.)

Just Sayin...

Hard for me to suspend enough disbelief to watch this movie. Having grown up in Sioux City, I am aware that there are no Lakota Sioux reservations near there. Closest one is a Winnebago reservation in Nebraska. Lakota Sioux are further west in north central Nebraska and central South Dakota and have several reservations there. Dakota Sioux are more predominant in Sioux City. I also feel that the premise of the movie is somewhat demeaning to the people of the region. Additionally, I remember there being a strong push for the tribes to keep their children within the tribe and to try to raise them with the tribal heritage. A couple from Beverly Hills seems pretty far-fetched to the reality of this adoption scenario.

Using the natural beauty and mystique of Marrakech, Morocco as a backdrop, Stephanie uses herself as bait to discover the sadistic murderer of her childhood friend. C.I.A. agents Peter Masters and Jeremy Avery lead her on an erotic and intriguing trail in search of the killer. The trap is set and the killer is "Unveiled".

Review :

some beautiful shots of Morocco in this tame, but entertaining thriller

To look at the video box cover for this movie, a woman in sexy clothes leaning against a wall with an exotic background, one might think this is an erotic thriller. It's not, really.

Stephanie is a rich woman (or a woman with a rich father). She also has a drug problem, and when she goes out to buy an "eight-ball" with a recent acquaintance in a bad part of town, her companion gets accidentally shot by Stephanie's gun.

Stephanie goes to visit a friend in Morocco, who has met a man she hopes to marry. When Stephanie and her friend get separated in a market, they hire a young local boy named Moon to be Stephanie's guide and all-around helper.

The friend and her man Jeremy, who Stephanie does not get to meet, go off on a trip together. Moroccan police arrive, interested in Stephanie's friend, and she also meets a man from the US Embassy in Rabat, Morocco. He tells her that her friend may be a victim of a jet- setting serial killer. When she meets a man named Jeremy who matches the description, she offers to help try to determine if he is the killer by wearing a wire.

Stephanie finds Jeremy attractive and charming, though "with an edge." Jeremy is somewhat secretive, and says he's writing a novel.

As I wrote above, this isn't exactly an erotic thriller. When there is a big build-up for a scene of lovemaking, the camera cuts away before anything starts, and the next shot is of the next day. There is no nudity in the movie.

There are, however, some nice street scenes of Morocco, a drive through the desert, and lots of interiors that certainly look as if they were shot on location in Morocco as well. All the local color is nice, and there is also some Arab music on the soundtrack. One does hear the Muslim call to prayer a few times (though religion does not factor into the movie at all), but they avoid the cliché of showing a shot of a minaret while doing so.

The ending is more or less satisfying. Despite the serial killer element to the plot, there are no murders depicted in the movie, nor corpses. On the whole, pretty tame.

Something lost in the translation

(Note: Over 500 of my movie reviews are now available in my book "Cut to the Chaise Lounge or I Can't Believe I Swallowed the Remote!" Get it at Amazon.)

There's some interesting use of sound In "Angel Dust" and some splendid cinematography by Norimicho Kasamatu, especially of interiors and the memorable scene with many umbrellas. Kaho Minami, who plays the female lead, Setsuk Suma, a Tokyo "police psychologist," is beautiful, and her co-star Takeshi Wakamatsu, as psychologist Rei Aku, has an appealing rakishness about him. Unfortunately the plodding direction by Sogo Ishii lacks tension and rambles more than a bit. Add to that a convoluted mishmash of pop psychology, stilted dialogue, posed theatrics, and we have one long disappointment.

The dialogue is probably not as bad as it appears in the English subtitles, which were very poorly edited with bad verb numbers, wrong tenses and some strange word translations, e.g., "re-brain- washing" for reprogramming. Or, "You're a pleasure homicidal mania" the killer is told, meaning the killer enjoys his work, I imagine. Annoying, unconvincing and too long were the "re-brain- washing" sequences presented in grainy, flickering black and white (we were supposed to be seeing them as on video tape). The idea of a religious cult member committing murders on the Tokyo subway is as real as newspaper headlines, of course, but the psychology behind the killings here didn't wash. The "religion" was so generic as to be anonymous. We felt nothing for the victims because they were not made real, nor were any of the characters except the leads really animated.

More than anything though this movie suffered from the miscasting of Kaho Minami as the police shrink. She was somewhat believable in her "disintegrating" phase (although the scene at Aku's sanatorium with him on the TV screen was unintentionally silly), but entirely too wimpy and dreamy to be convincing as any kind of cop. The scenes with her and Aku were interesting as far as they went; unfortunately, the sharp chemical contrast between his macho nature and her alluring femininity was not ignited. One had the sense they were saving that for after the film was over. Too bad. The androgynous nature of her husband and the killer seemed pointless, but again possibly something was lost in the translation.

I think what happened here is Sogo Ishii got caught between a theatrical tradition and some notions of Western style realism, and ended up with succotash.

Good drama

I like this movie. It is a good drama with intense and thrilling emotions, though it is not an action movie. Maybe the acting could have been better, but still the dialog works very well. Also the sometimes dramatic photo works very well in enhancing the scenes without getting disturbing.

The plot is a boat trip that does not end as it was intended. The characters (the "crew") have different intentions with their life, but their reasons might not be the best and so it leads them astray and sometimes on colliding courses. For some the smog finally lifts while others stay helplessly lost.

I can't believe that Henriksen did this film. The simple fact that I actually sat through this entire film makes me feel that maybe I need to re-evaluate the way I spend my time watching films. If you ever have the time to watch this movie, do yourself a favor and go do something productive, like counting how many cigarette burns your friends have accidentally put into the carpet in your house, because you will feel much more useful doing this than you will watching this total waste of space. Eric Roberts fans avoid this like you would a rabid dog .....

I am always interested in seeing interesting actors like Eric Roberts, and will seek out his most obscure films. "Love is a Gun" certainly is obscure, and there is good reason why, it is beyond bad. The entire film can only be described as unwatchable, because of nightmare sequences, flashback sequences, and a totally contrived ending. You have seen Eric Roberts play the same crazed character in far better movies, where at least some things made sense. Nothing makes sense in "Love is a Gun", and R. Lee Ermey seems embarrassed to be involved. Believe me, watching Eric Roberts lose touch with reality is not entertainment. Even a very brief Kelly Preston nude scene is actually a body double. This is definitely not worth 92 minutes of your life. - MERK

I've read some of the comments and they are simply ridiculous. This is a masterpiece of social criticism, period. If you don't understand it, that's your problem, but this is one of those intellectual achievements that are overlooked at their release and appreciated 100 years later..

This society is sick: feminism, political correctness, "sexual" correctness and God knows what. And Mr Mamet analyzes one of the most pathetic and odious aspect of the matter: sexual harassment (Once I've read a feminist saying that rape is "subtle" and women who thought they had consenting sex might have actually been cheated - by evil men, I suppose). I don't even know how the producer could find a distributor for this film.. Thanks God he did.

People, you do not deserve a film like this. Go get a crappy independent movie!

love,lust,desire,hate,death,regret......

Dias Contados (Running Out of Time) is a movie about love, lust, desire, hate, death, and regret, that takes place in Madrid, Spain. Antonio (Carmelo Gomez) is in town with two others on personal business. Charo (Ruth Gabriel) and Vanessa (Candela Pena) are two roommates with a laundry list of issues. Lisardo (Javier Bardem) is a local junkie. Portugues (Chacho Carreras) is a drug dealer trying to evade the cops. Lourdes (Elvira Minquez) is one of Antonio's companions to Madrid, who loves him far more than she gets in return. Throw in a husband of Charo getting out of jail, and edgy cops trying to bust Portugues; and you have an amazing movie that should've gotten much more attention here in the states.

The performances in this film are much better than most you see by actors who receive far more attention. Especially Ruth Gabriel, who gives one of the most memorable performances by a young actress (18 or 19) I've seen. Carmelo Gomez is a leading man who should be a household name here, and would be if we respected international films, the same way they do ours. They both give Oscar worthy performances in a film that will definitely leave an impression on you.

Recommended for those who liked Dirty Pretty Things, or 21 grams.

Raveena tandon gorgeous

I love this movie for only one reason Raveena Tandon I watched it a year ago and I was not that interested until Akshay Kumar turned up and before you know it that song appeared Tu Cheez Bari Hai Mast Mast. I don't know many other Rajiv Rai movies but I hope he hasn't quit the industry I'd love to see another flick with him as director. I think Raveena Tandon can dance well also I have seen her in more serious roles but I wish she would do something like this again and get back with her on screen partner Akshay in real life they made a great couple. I would give this movie 7 OUT OF 10

Nick Gunar (Dolph Lundgren) is a burnt-out, jaded and hard-up former mercenary who is having a difficult time adjusting to civilian life. At the end of his rope, he is hired by the Nitro Mine Corporation to strong-arm the natives of a South China Sea island into giving up their rights to its valuable mineral resources. Nick loathes the thought of another mission, but this seemingly easy job will earn him enough money to get back with his estranged family. He recruits some of his former mercenary buddies to help him with the job. The island people refuse to give up their land and Nick decides to help them fight the greedy corporation that hired him. The island and its people bring Nick back to life. He finally finds something worth fighting for and a place to call home. As greed and treachery begin to unravel, Nick's band of mercenaries choose sides. Some are with him and others, still working for the corporation, will stop at nothing to destroy him.

The weaker parts are not what you may think

The "mercenary having change of heart" thing is nothing new, but with John Sayles penning the script, it doesn't quite go on formula. The change is gradual, and the mercenaries right from the start are presented with a situation (and subsequent things) they didn't plan on. Lundgren actually does pretty well, not just that the movie gets away with his accent by making his character Swedish. His performance is more lively and a bit more emotional than usual - nothing award-winning, but pretty decent all the same.

However, the climatic action sequence is pretty poorly done. Scenes come and go quickly due to some unbelievably rapid editing, some other scenes seem placed out of order, some linking footage seems to have been cut out, and a few sequences are blurry and out of focus. It didn't help that it's only available here in pan-and-scan, making some scenes even harder to make out.

Not among Tweed's best

"Illicit Dreams" is not the first film to feature the premise of a woman who has recurring nightmares (remember "Still of the Night"?), and it certainly isn't the best, either. But this being an erotic thriller that fails both with the eroticism and with the thrills, we have to content ourselves with whatever interest the plot holds. And it does hold some, mainly due to the metaphysical angle (psychokinetic connection, or something like that, bonds the two leads) that's rare for a Shannon Tweed flick. Andrew Stevens directs, and he gives an unusually bright, richly colored look to the film. But he can't do anything about the ludicrous, hard-to-swallow final "twist". (*1/2)
